In the United States

# 1. National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO)

Program: CCO Concrete Pump Operator Certification

Overview: The NCCCO offers a comprehensive certification program developed by industry experts. The program includes a written examination that assesses an operator's knowledge of concrete pump operations.  NCCCO

Process:

  • CCO Handbook: Complete instructions are available in the CCO Candidate Handbook for Concrete Pump Operators. 

  • Application: Candidates can apply for the written exam through the NCCCO website.

  • Written Examination: The Concrete Pump Operator Written Examination contains 80 questions that must be completed in 90 minutes. Topics include: Pre-trip planning, driving the truck, pump setup, placement operations, pump preparation for travel, and end-of-day procedures.

  • During the practical exam, skills are tested on tasks such as:

  • Equipment setup and boom unfolding

  • Attaching components

  • Hose placement and operation through designated areas

  • Clean-out and shutdown procedures

  • Fees: The cost for the exam is $210 + an additional $70 for the practical exam.  NCCCO

Recertification: Operators must recertify every five years to maintain their credentials.

#2. American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA)

Program: ACPA Operator Certification Program

Overview: The ACPA offers a nationally recognized safety certification program for concrete pump operators, aiming to ensure the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Process:

  • Training: Operators undergo training that covers safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and operational best practices. Operators must take the online safety training course.  There is also a free study guide available as a pdf

  • Examination: After training, operators must pass a written test or online test to demonstrate their knowledge and competency. The test is $70 for ACPA members and $245 for non-members.   

  • Re-certification:  Certification is valid for two years. After two years, the operator must take the ACPA ReCertification Exam to renew certification. If certification lapses, you have to re-take the initial certification exam. 

Recertification: Operators are required to recertify periodically to stay updated with industry standards and safety practices.

In Canada

Concrete pump operator certification in Canada varies by province, with formal programs available in British Columbia and Ontario.

#1. Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) Program in British Columbia

Program: CCPO Certification

Overview: The BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) offers the Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) program, the first of its kind in North America. This certification became mandatory on January 1, 2024, requiring all concrete pump operators to hold a valid CCPO certificate or work under the supervision of a certified operator. (WorkSafeBC)

  • Written Exam: Candidates must pass a written examination that assesses their theoretical knowledge of concrete pump operations.

  • Practical Exam: Candidates must also demonstrate their practical skills in operating a concrete pump.

Recertification: Operators must renew their certification periodically to ensure ongoing compliance with provincial regulations.

#2. - Apprenticeships in Ontario 

Ontario provides a structured apprenticeship program for concrete pump operators, encompassing both on-the-job and in-school training. The program requires approximately 2,159 hours to complete, including 2,000 hours of practical experience and 159 hours of classroom instruction. (Skilled Trades Ontario)

#3. Other Provinces

In other provinces, concrete pump operator certification is less standardized. Some provinces, such as Alberta, regulate related occupations like Construction Craft Workers, which may encompass certain aspects of concrete pump operation. However, specific certification programs for concrete pump operators are not universally established across Canada.
